Moyne and Joeys win extra-time cup thrillers

Saturday last saw the first of this season’s cup finals at Bridge Rovers’ Bogside ground when the under-13s of Moyne Rangers and Forth Celtic battled for honours, followed by Shamrock Rovers and St. Josephs in the under-15 decider.
Moyne were celebrating a 3-2 penalty shootout win against Forth when the U13 final finished scoreless after extra time.
It also took extra time to sort out a cracking U15 decider with Joeys eventually winning on a 3-1 scoreline. Jamie Donnelly was the Rovers’ marksman while Tomas Whelan (2) and Cormac Hammil scored for the winners.
U15 Division 2 champions Rovers, however, were celebrating on Monday night when they were presented with the trophy by League Acting Chairman Ian Lawlor.
Thanks for the use of their excellent facilities and for their help on the day is extended to Bridge Rovers from the Wexford Schoolboys League.
The cup action moves to Grove Park, Kilmuckridge this Saturday when St. Joseph’s will host the U14 and U16 finals.
Forth Celtic will be contesting both games, taking on All Blacks in the under-14 final and then facing Shamrock Rovers in under-16 decider.
Remarkably, it’s Forth’s ‘B’ team which has reached the final, conceding just one goal from play in their four games along the way. That was to Shelbourne in the semi-final when they drew 1-1 and won 3-2 in the penalty shootout.
Likewise, All Blacks’ defence has been solid, with just one goal conceded and they have rattled in 14 goals from play, along with four more in the semi-final penalty shootout which they won 4-2 against Wexford Albion after the game finished 0-0.
Under-16 Division 1 champions Forth have been very impressive on the road to the final with some scintillating performances, including a 1-0 victory against North End in the semi-final.
They will be facing a battling Rovers side which has reached the decider after winning by the odd goal in their four games played.
The under-14 final will kick-off at 11am, while the under-16 decider has a 1pm starting time.
Congratulations to former Kennedy Cup manager Ben Casserly who was in charge of the last Sunday’s Wexford Volkswagen Cup winners Gorey Rangers. Ben managed the Wexford U14s in Limerick in 2012 when Alan Kelly was his assistant. Alan is in charge of the Wexford Kennedy Cup squad this year.
The Tracie Lawlor Memorial Tournament will be played in Courtown Hibs’ Ounavarra Park ground this weekend, with the group games on Friday evening and Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Hosted by the Wexford U12 management, the main competitions are the Tracie Lawlor Memorial Cup tournament and the Alex Robinson Memorial Cup tournament.
The Wexford U13 squad will be travelling to Tipperary on Saturday for the preliminary rounds of the Cremin Cup. If successful, they will return on Sunday for the final.
The Wexford U11s will also be in action when they take part in the Frank O’Byrne Tournament in Waterford on Sunday next.

A reminder once again that midweek and weekend games are still in full swing, please check the fixtures for ALL age groups on the Schoolboys League website.
League winners are asked to forward presentation photographs to info@wexfordschoolboys.ie for publication on the website.
