WEXFORD U12s AND U16s TAKE THE SUBWAY CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS

IT WAS good news all the way as Wexford returned to Subway Championship action last weekend with the county under-12s and under-16s recording wins in their Group 1 games.

The under-12s travelled to take on Carlow and team captain Ben Long scored the only goal of a game which Wexford dominated for long spells. The Slaneysiders had drawn 1-1 in their opening game against the Midlands League before Christmas and Midlands, who top the table on goal difference, were 5-0 winners against Wicklow last weekend. Next up for Wexford is an away trip to Wicklow on Saturday, February 23rd while Midlands will visit Carlow.

The under-16s had a 5-0 victory against the North Eastern Counties in their first Group 1 game and were 4-0 winners when they took on the Midlands League at Bunclody on Sunday. Calum Gamble was Wexford’s hat-trick hero with Dylan McEvoy also getting on the scoresheet. DDSL meanwhile, were accounting for Wicklow on a 6-0 scoreline to edge ahead of Wexford on goal difference. The crunch game will come on Sunday, February 24th when Wexford travel to play DDSL at Abbotstown and a victory would see Sean Keane’s team go top of the table.

· Wexford Albion and Shamrock Rovers U15s were out of luck in their Skechers SFAI Cup last-16 games on Saturday, with both Wexford teams losing out on penalties. Albion lost the shootout 6-5 after the game had finished 4-4 while Rovers went down 4-3 with the score in their game 1-1 after extra time. But both Wexford teams now have another big game to look forward to as the will meet in the Skechers SFAI Cup Regional semi-final at a date to be announced.

· The uneven age groups will provide the Wexford Schoolboys League action on Saturday. Check out all the games and times on the website.

· The FAI Referees Beginners Course held on Saturday and Sunday last at Ferrycarrig Park was a big success with 14 prospective referees in attendance. Eleven of these were from Wexford and they will now, hopefully, add to the numbers in the local branch.

· Former Curracloe and Wexford Kennedy Cup defender Kevin O’Connor is currently on loan to Cork City from English Championship club Preston North End and scored for the Leesiders in their 2-1 President’s Cup defeat to double champions Dundalk last weekend. The attendance figure at Turner’s Cross was 2,777.
